Minister Bernini in Djibouti and the Med-Or project on Underwater Infrastructure
During her visit to Djibouti, the Minister of University and Research also visited the submarine cable landing station, at the centre of a project promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and by Med-Or Italian Foundation.
The Minister of University and Research, Anna Maria Bernini, visited Djibouti to launch a cooperation pathway in the fields of scientific research and higher education, supporting Italy’s commitment in the Horn of Africa and within the framework of the Mattei Plan activities.
During the institutional mission, the Minister of University and Research also visited the submarine telecommunications cable landing station, which hosts a project promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and by Med-Or Italian Foundation, aimed at strengthening the capacity of Djiboutian authorities to inspect and protect these critical infrastructures.
The initiative is part of the cooperation framework launched by Med-Or with the Ministry of Economy and Finance of the Republic of Djibouti, formalised through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding dedicated to the development of joint projects in the areas of critical infrastructure, digital connectivity and strategic dialogue.
Located at the entrance of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, Djibouti represents a key hub for global digital connectivity. Approximately 18% of the data transmitted through international submarine cables passes through the country, which hosts 12 cables, six of which are connected to Italy. Through this project, Med-Or reaffirms its commitment to promoting initiatives aimed at strengthening cooperation between Italy and Africa.
