Geopolitics, Technologies and Security: Challenges and Prospects for Italy

This initiative, developed by Med-Or Italian Foundation in collaboration with the Luiss School of Government under the “Geopolitics and Technology” call for proposals promoted by Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo and Fondazione CSF, is part of a research project dedicated to the geopolitical and technological challenges facing the Mediterranean region.

On Wednesday, 8 July, the International Conference “Geopolitics, Technologies and Security: Challenges and Prospects for Italy” was held in Rome at Nazionale Spazio Eventi. The conference was organised by Med-Or Italian Foundation in collaboration with the Luiss School of Government and was part of the research project “Geopolitics, technologies and security in the Mediterranean. Evolution and challenges to global security in the Broader Mediterranean, between geopolitical competition and technological revolution. What prospects for Italy?”. The project was developed within the framework of the “Geopolitics and Technology” call for proposals, promoted by Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo and Fondazione CSF.

The conference provided a valuable forum for dialogue among experts and representatives from academia, public institutions and industry on the key issues emerging from the research activities. Particular attention was dedicated to the challenges posed by geopolitical competition, technological innovation, energy security and non-conventional threats in the Mediterranean region.

The programme featured two panels. The first, entitled “Connectivity, technology, energy and security: the Mediterranean as a global frontier”, was moderated by Ginevra Leganza and included contributions from Hoda A. Al Khzaimi, Director of the Center for Cyber Security at New York University Abu Dhabi; Giuseppe Calabrò, Energy Security Advisor to the Italian Minister of Defence and Full Professor at the University of Tuscia; Mohamed Ali Chihi, Executive Director of the Global Institute for Strategic Research (GISR) in Doha; Stefano Del Col, Director of the Secretariat of the Supreme Defence Council, Presidency of the Republic of Italy; and Gaetano Quagliariello, Dean of the Luiss School of Government.

The second panel, entitled “The weight of geopolitics: between conflicts and technological competition. What prospects for Italy”, was moderated by Roberto Napoletano and featured Enrico Bagnasco, Chairman of Confindustria Assafrica e Mediterraneo and CEO of Sparkle; Nunzia Ciardi, Deputy Director General of the Italian National Cybersecurity Agency (ACN); Francesco Macrì, Chairman of Leonardo; and Biagio Mazzotta, Chairman of Fincantieri. The conference ended with closing remarks by Marco Minniti, Chairman of Med-Or Italian Foundation.

As the project’s flagship public event, the conference helped disseminate the findings of the research activities. These will be brought together in a final scientific publication, to be presented in Milan in November.
